Is It Safe for Kids?
By the numbers, yes: the U.S. State Department rates Nayarit state a Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”) advisory, and local safety concerns center on petty theft rather than anything violent. The bigger day-to-day consideration is actually the streets themselves — they’re cobblestone, narrow, and shared by pedestrians, golf carts, ATVs, and the occasional truck, so keep a hand on younger kids in town rather than letting them range freely. The town center stays busy and well-lit well into the evening, with an active tourist police presence.
Kid-Friendly Beaches vs. the Main Surf Beach
The main town beach has a working surf break, so it’s not the best spot for little ones without supervision. Better options:
- Playa Los Muertos — calm water, a roped swimming area, and no boat or surf traffic. The best-suited named beach for young children.
- The south end of the main beach, near the fishing boats — generally gentler in the morning, with the swim zone separated from the surf break.
A few universal rules worth keeping in mind: there are no lifeguards anywhere, so supervision is entirely on you; rip currents can occur even when the water looks calm; and it’s worth waiting 48–72 hours after a heavy storm before swimming.
Surf Lessons for Kids
Several schools in town teach children as young as five (with basic swimming ability), using small instructor-to-student ratios and boards sized appropriately for kids. It’s a genuinely popular activity for families here, not an afterthought — worth booking a day or two ahead in high season.

Casual, kid-tolerant spots are easy to find: Sayulita Burger Company, Chaman, and The Dock are reliable crowd-pleasers, and ChocoBanana is a longtime favorite for something quick with a beach-town feel. Street tacos are everywhere and generally excellent — just stick to stands with a steady line of local customers.
Activities Kids Actually Love
- Turtle releases — Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita, a volunteer-run conservation camp on the north end of the beach, has been operating for over a decade and hosts hatchling releases in season (roughly October–December). It’s a real, hands-on conservation program, and a memorable evening for kids — check their current schedule before you go, since release times shift by season.
- Horseback riding — jungle-to-beach trail rides that work for most ages, with shorter and longer tour options.
- Boat trips to the Marietas Islands — a good family outing, though note that the famous “Hidden Beach” swim-through specifically restricts children under 10 (and adults over 65) for safety reasons; general park visits and snorkeling don’t carry that restriction.
Health & Practical Tips
- Water: stick to bottled or filtered water; ocean water itself tests well within Mexico’s safety standards for swimming.
- Mosquitoes: dengue is present, especially in rainy season (June–October) — pack repellent and cover up around dawn and dusk.
- Scorpions: stings are uncommon and usually mild, but get any child who’s stung checked by a doctor regardless of how minor it looks.
- Medical care: a local clinic handles routine needs; Puerto Vallarta’s Saint Luke’s Hospital, about 45 minutes away, is the nearest full hospital for anything serious. Travel insurance with evacuation coverage is worth having.
